What Causes Itchy Red Rashes On Legs While Taking Plavix And Aspirin?
Question: Hello Dr.
I had a heart attack 4 years and after I had my stents placed the Dr's put me on a Plavix, Lipitor and 81 mg aspirin regimen. When I came home from the hospital my legs were very itchy and had a red rash on them, I also had a lot of ringing in my ears. I talked to my Dr about this and he said that it would go away and it did, but after that, I developed upper back and neck pain and continue to have it to this day. I had never had back problems before and have had two MRI's done and both came back with no abnormally high bone degeneration for a man my age. I stopped the Plavix a year after the stent placements, but continue with the aspirin. I was wondering if you think that I could be allergic to the aspirin? If so, what can I do about it. It doesn't feel like muscle pain, it feels more like tendons tearing away from the side of my spine in the thoracic region of my back. Any ideas or help would be appreciated. Thank you

The upper back and neck pain that you have is not usually associated with aspirin. It can be related to a wrong posture, stress , fatigue or low vitamin D3 levels. The age related degenerative changes are not aggravated with aspirin.
An allergic reaction to aspirin is more likely to cause a generalized muscle or bone pain but not a pain restricted to the upper back. Using a wrong mattress for sleeping can also cause such a problem.
It is best to get your vitamin D3 levels evaluated and use a heating pad while resting under the painful area. Taking an oral muscle relaxant will also help. Do consider starting with back strengthening exercises under the guidance of a physiotherapist.
Do not stop taking aspirin without consulting your cardiologist.
