Posted on Tue, 7 Apr 2015
Question: My Girl baby is now 10 months old. She has got irritation problem in her urinary part. When she gets irritation, she lies on her belly and moves her hip for a long time and crying. That too in the evening and at night this is more. Pl. suggest, she is suffering a lot b'cos of this irritation. We also consulted 2 doctors and also tested for any urinary and motion infection problem, but its null. Doctor has suggested Flagyl Suspension and given Dermocalm lotion for oral application in that area. But this lotion works for a small time only. She is having this problem for more than 1 1/2 months.

Brief Answer:
Irritation in urinary part unlikely. Uneasiness due to other cause probable

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

What I understand from your statements is that the child often rolls on her belly and tries to move her hips, and often cries in the process. I do not think that it is related to irritation of her urinary area. In fact I have doubt whether it has any relationship to the bowels as well. That is the reason no abnormality showed up in the investigations. The child might be showing such behavior simply due to uneasiness of the position while struggling to get up. A child of this age should be able to sit alone and should be in the process of being able to stand up. If that is not the case, child should get a developmental assessment.

I do not think that the child needs medicines or lotions for the same. Rather, there is role of careful observation and assessment to ascertain the cause of uneasiness of the child. You will have to talk to your doctor in this regard since he would be in a position to examine the child closely.

Thanks for your reply. But I think, I had not clearly mentioned my kid's problem. She is now sitting alone, crawling and trying to walk also. I know for sure that she is having some sort of irritation only in the urinary part. When she gets that she lies down with her face lying down and moves her buttocks to and fro in such a way that her urinary area is getting rubbed with the bed and also presses down with pressure. At that time, she keeps her legs very tight and uses to press down. Now, we are applying coconut oil at that time and it gives her relief at that time only.
I need a permanent solution to this problem. Pl. help.

Thanks

Brief Answer:
It could be a part of normal psychosexual development

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

I understand the situation and also that she might be rubbing the area. But I doubt if there is a problem. It might be that the child is exploring the sensation that she feels when she rubs the area. It could be a part of the normal psychosexual development. You may read about it at:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychosexual_development#Freudian_psychosexual_development

The age of onset might vary to some extent. So, there could be a likely correlation. It is unlikely to help by applying coconut oil.

Hope that helps.

I doubt if its that is the problem. B'cos even at midnight, in the middle of her sleep, she does the same sometimes. Also why she should cry at that time. When we apply oil or lotion, it seems to decrease her irritation and then she stops doing that.

Many times, after passing urine she gets that irritation and cries a lot.

Brief Answer:
Clinical examination and correlation required.

Detailed Answer:
I have suggested the possibilities that I felt more probable. In such a case it is really important to examine the child carefully. But that is beyond scope. In such a case I have no way other than to ask you to discuss the possibilities with your local doctor who can examine the child and assess her clinically.
