What Causes Irregular Sleep?

default
Posted on Wed, 16 Apr 2014
Question: I do know about triggers. I think I had an irregular sleep situation that may have triggered this particular cluster. I have seen a neurologist and have been diagnosed with Classic Migraines. I have had them all my life. With the introduction of the triptans, it has enabled me to continue with my career and be able to function. The problem is that when I get these cluster of migraines, the triptans work, but the following day or the second day, it is back. I do take a preventative which has lessened the occurrence but not eliminated them. I do not want to get into the habit of taking triptans for several days in a row. What would you suggest?

Brief Answer: Self help/doctor's advice can help. Detailed Answer: Hi XXXXX, Migraine itself is a condition with tremendous suffering that disturbs life. I appreciate courage / luck to have a successful carrier in spite of the problem for a long span of 66 years. There is a natural drop in ability to bear the pain & increase in tension with advancing age. I understand your concern. Triptans are known to have good control on cluster head aches; they are not habit forming, and can be taken up to 10 times in a month. Triptans are many times taken in under dose, out of fear of habit formation. The only thing that bothers me, is possibility of ischemic heart problems that are associated with it. I would therefore advice you to be regularly in contact with cardiologist to exclude any heart problem. Also discuss with your Neurologist about the safe doses for you. For inadequate dose may not be sufficient to break the cycle clusters. Now few things to reduce number of attacks/clusters- * When you are sure about the aura being irregular sleep-it's desired to avoid it by lifestyle changes -avoid stress/strain, - have a healthy nutritive diet/regular exercises, respiratory exercises( pranayamas),Try to be busy in the work you love to do, try to have a regular sleep time. - take help of sleep therapies (Yognidra), - try for concentration of mind/meditation/positive attitude. * Alcohol, smoaking, & naps during day time are known to trigger clusters Try to avoid them. * You can use steroids/oxygen therapy (by special non re breathable masks) to avoid attacks/reduce clusters with your doctor's advice. * Acupuncture can help. * Surgery is recommended in few patients. All these things would be better applied after your neurologist's advice. Using few additional preventive measures& life style changes would help you to overcome your problem. I hope the answer was informative & useful to you. Any further help you need I will be happy to help. Thanks.
