What Causes Irregular Menstruation Postpartum?

default
Posted on Tue, 24 Jan 2017
Question: Hi Doctor,

I delivered my second baby on 24th Feb 2016 (normal, vaginal delivery). I had continues bleeding till 28th March 2016 after delivery. After that, I haven't yet got my periods. I did pregnancy test at home and that resulted negative.

When I delivered my first baby I got my periods after 6 months of delivery (normal, vaginal delivery).however this time its more than 10 months.

I am really worried.

Hi

Thanks for your reply. Please suggest what all tests i need to be done. As i could not find any lab offering "Hormonal profile" in XXXXXXX However i found this while searching online "LH, FSH, PROLACTIN, TESTOSTERONE, Total, DHEAS, 17-OHP, INSULIN-F, TSH". It will be helpful if you can please suggest what all individual tests i need.

Brief Answer:
Hormonal dysfunction should be ruled out

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Delayed periods 6 months after childbirth can be due to pregnancy, hormonal disturbances like hypothyroidism or hyperprolactinemia, or due to pituitary gland dysfunction which can occur after excessive blood loss during delivery,
If the pregnancy test is negative, then the pregnancy is ruled out.
I will suggest you to get your hormonal profile done including thyroid hormone and prolactin hormone levels.
If normal, then you should consult an endocrinologist for a detailed examination and investigations to detect any pituitary dysfunction.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
