What Causes Intrusive Anxiety Of Getting Injured?

default
Posted on Thu, 27 Apr 2017
Question: I have a chronic fear about injury to my neck. It is mostly manageable – but sometimes it is extremely intense, forcing me to repeatedly keep touching my neck. It also includes an intense fear of injury to my adam's apple. It has been an on and off issue for a long time. Is this common? It sometimes makes concentrating on work much harder. Is it a psychological issue or a neurological one? Can it be controlled through medication or therapy?

The fear is primarily of a getting cut in my neck. I haven't gotten myself checked by a doctor as yet. The fear is more episodic and usually comes right before I go to sleep. It primarily makes me very uncomfortable about my neck.

Brief Answer:
This is due to intrusive anxiety.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again

The intrusive unwanted fear of getting cut over neck is occurring due to anxiety only. As the fear is not persistent so we can rule out any problem of neck easily.

The fear is due to anxiety and first step in treatment is to reassure yourself that how will you get cut or injury on neck. Try to reassure yourself that there is nothing wrong and you are absolutely alright. You can distract yourself by Breathing exercises or progressive muscles relaxation exercises. When ever the unwanted thought comes in mind try to distract yourself and reassure yourself. This will reduce your anxiety significantly.

If anxiety persists then you have to consult a Psychiatrist for evaluation. Drugs like SSRIs like Fluoxetine or Escitalopram can prove useful in your case. The drugs will help in reducing your intrusive thoughts and you will feel better. Please remain relaxed, there is nothing wrong in you, just because of anxiety you have such fear. With treatment you will be alright.

Thanks and Take care.
