What Causes Intermittent Vertigo?

default
Posted on Mon, 19 Jun 2017
Question: having random bouts of vertigo. Before it was usually associated with sinus congestion that I could make go away by taking a sudafed pill while still taking my 12 hr allegra D (usually only take one a day). Pollen season or exposure to my specific allergens might cause me to take 2 a day.
Can not lay flat on my back without a pillow. when i am hit with a vertigo attack(?) most recently I was changing the position of my head relative to my neck. Like walking downstairs. Had to stop grab my head and wait till it passed. next longer flight i went down by just feeling my way with my feet and kept head level.
Today when I went to get out of bed, I had to do it in stages so the room would't spin so badly that I wanted to throw up. Took my Allegra D and was trying to note whether it was neck bending back, forth, side to side that induced the vertigo. Emptied the dryer and as long as my head stayed in the same relative postion with my neck. Nothing overwhelmed me. blurry vision in left eye like eye guck not internal eye floaters , but I do have those. Has been 3+ years since last eye exam. Moved to CO with husband, for our daughter and her new baby (now 3 1/2 yrs old).
Is it dried sinus stuff? Diabetes (never diagnosed but know symptoms from my husband)? don't know where to start to get it fixed. Don't have job (on SS), Daughter is a CMA.
Hopefully this is not TMI, and thank you for your time.

Brief Answer:
Related to sinus infection

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through your query and understand your concerns. The organ of hearing lies in our inner ear (vestibulocochlear apparatus) and is also associated with the sense of balance. Certain viral infections as well as sinus infections (sinusitis) can give rise to such presentations as you have described. The Eustachian tube (thin tube on either side connecting between the middle ear and the inner throat) blockage due to thickened mucus can also cause such problems. Vestibulocochlear stabilizing agents like cinnarizine or betahistine might be needed. [Since these are prescription medicines you might need to visit a doctor to get these prescribed.] Since such infections are usually associated with an allergic component, taking Allegra D should provide relief. Taking steam inhalation should also help as water vapor would reach deep inside and would help in diluting the thickened mucus, thus providing relief.

You also need to drink plenty of water and fluids. Let me know what you mean by TMI and I would guide you further.

Dear Dr. Prof XXXXXXX Saha,

thank you for your on line diagnosis. that sound s reasonable to me. Will try the steam inhalation (did that alot as a child). TMI is a phrase my children used when I would go into great detail about something (usually icky stuff). It literally means: Too Much Information. They would alsocover their ears, close their eyes and say "Loo Loo Loo" to try and drown me out.

Thank you again,

went to the drs he said I have BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo) and gave me home remedies from webmd.com. But I was wondering if there were videos of what they are trying to describe, because they did not demonstrate how to do it to me.

Detailed Answer:
BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo) is exactly the technical term for what I thought it to be. It is what I have already described and explained to you. There are a number of videos on youtube and you can possibly check them out:
