What Causes Intermittent Stomach Discomfort And Increased Belches?

Question: Hi,

I sometimes feel a little bit of discomfort in my stomach. This is usually after I eat something, but not immediately after. It is always very minor. The best way I can describe it is that it is like a little sick feeling in the stomach. Sometimes I notice I burp a little more while I feel this way. It usually lasts from 45 minutes to an hour or 2. I can do all daily activities even if I feel this way, it does not get in the way of doing anything. Also, it is not persistent, it does not happen all the time. My appetite is completely normal and I can eat everything, I do not feel too full during or after eating, I don't feel bloated or too full, no pain or burning, It goes away by itself after a little while. I usually get this feeling once every few days, lasting for about an hour on average. Even while I feel this way, I can eat whatever I want without any problems. No nausea or anything. Sometimes I notice that when I feel this way, eating something helps. (like crackers, green or herbal tea, pizza) The feeling only lasts for a little while when it comes, and goes away by itself. I have taken pepto bismol and zantac a few times, but I don't know if they helped because even when I don't take them, the feeling goes away by itself. I think when I do take them maybe it goes away a little faster.

Last month I was sick for a few weeks and that time I felt this way almost everyday (along with other symptoms). I went to the doctor and he said this is most likely a virus and didn't prescribe anything. All of the symptoms slowly went away. This upset stomach feeling comes and goes still.

I get worried sometimes that it can be something serious, but I asked my doctor last time, and all other people I ask say this sounds very minor and might be related to diet, or minor indigestion. I would like a second opinion

Brief Answer:
This does not sound like anything serious.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

I can understand being concerned - unexplained things can unsettle us. But given the history you provided (and thank you for the detail on the history), I think the symptoms you are having may be left over from when you were sick last month. It can take some time to resolve if there has been an infection or some irritation.

None of your description sounds like there is anything serious going on.

If you develop remarkable abdominal pain, or abnormal pooping that persists for more than 3 weeks, or a fever, or severe nausea after eating (particularly after fatty foods), then it would be time to be reevaluated. But the symptoms you are having now will likely resolve given a few more weeks, given that they seem to be a remnant of the illness you had last month.

I hope this information helps.
