What Causes Intermittent Sharp Pain In Left-sided Abdomen?

default
Posted on Wed, 20 May 2015
Question: Hi i have two questions:
On the left side of my body (heart's side) between the pancreas and lower large intestine (on the side or just to the front of the body) I feel a kind of sharp pain off and on. This is felt more when I eat eggs, or mayonnaise, etc, something with a lot of cholesterol, I take pravastatin, it seems to help. But if I stop eating things those things mention above and the like, the pain goes away. I am not sure what it is. Could you give me any advice. I take 10MG tabs, can I take more pravastatin?

Number two: I got a broken clavicle since january 3. it seems to be healing very well, i can move my hand but still feel pain and not able to do what I used to do, like to lift some weight. Can you tell me what to expect, will I be able to be as before or not? thanks

Brief Answer:
need some details to guide you better

Detailed Answer:
Hello

My name is Dr Muhammad Ali Rauf & i will look into your problem.

I have gone through your query and would try to help you in the best possible way. There could be a number of causes for your abdominal pain. I need some details to guide you better:

1. since when are you having this problem?
2. are you allergic to some food?
3. did such problem occur in past?
4. do you have diabetes, hypertension or any other illness?
5. are you on any medication other than parvastatin?
6. is there appearance of rash or itch as well along with pain?
7. is anyone else in the family also having similar complaint?

For second problem:
Healing usually takes few months. Initially you regain small movement at joint BUT later gradually it improves. Usually it takes 4-6 months for 80% recovery which may prolong. Physiotherapy plays an important role in healing. If not taken already then i would suggest you to get an appointment for a physiotherapist as well.

I will be looking forward for the answers to conclude the discussion in the best interest of yours.
Thank You

Brief Answer:
most probably allergic response to food

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thank you for getting back with the answers. I have gone through them. There is high possibility that the pain is because of allergic response to dairy or cholesterol containing products. If i were your treating doctor then i would have advised following things:

- cetirizine one at night for 3 days
- montelukast one daily for one month.
- get a baseline ultrasound abdomen.
- drotaverine thrice a day for 3 days
- stop the products that cause pain for 1 month. Then after treatment start again GRADUALLY in SMALL amounts to see if tolerance has been created or not by the body.

Feel free to get back for if you have any query. If not then don’t forget to close the discussion and rate it.
Wishing him a good health

Brief Answer:
Cervical rib v/s Inflammatory joint disease

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thank you for getting back with the answers. I have gone through them. I do apologize for asking these many questions but the idea is to guide best to the patient and covering the problem of not having 1-1 patient doctor contact.

Two possible differential comes with these findings you mentioned. First,Inflammatory joint disease and second, cervical rib. Both of them causes pain in fingers & kuckle area.
I would suggest you to visit hospital and set an appointment for a Rheumatologist(In particular). He will examine the joint and may perform some investigations like RA factor, C-Reactive protein assay to confirm the diagnosis. Cervical rib can be confirmed by undergoing X-ray Thoracic inlet. Further management will depend upon the results. Meanwhile following measures may give temporary relief:

- ibuprofen thrice a day for 3 days
- take hot water in a rubber bottle and place it over the joint. It will give soothing effect.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help if not then don't forget to close the discussion and rate it.
Wishing you good health !!
