What Causes Intermittent Pins And Needles Feeling In Arms?

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Apr 2015
Question: i have had pins and needles in my hand on and off since last summer. I was given anti-inflammatory tablets in case it was carpel tunnel syndrome. I still have the pins and needles and get them up my arm also. I have had my wedding ring resized twice since the summer although my had and arm do not look swollen. Yesterday for no reason I started to have pain/tenderness under my arm that feels a bit like an infected spot but I cannot feel or see any lump. I am a 50 year old healthy woman and exercise regularly. Could it be symptoms of a pinched nerve?

Brief Answer:
Features are suggestive of a pinched nerve.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Madam, Hi
Thanks for choosing HCM for your query.
I am glad to answer your query, hopefully it could be helpful to you.

I have gone through the problems you had since the last summer.
I am of the opinion that you have symptoms suggestive of pinched nerve apparently in the neck region.
It could be due narrowing of the disc spaces of the cervical vertebrae which causes compression on the nerves which supply the arm and the hand.
Since you have re-sized your wedding ring twice since the last summer without any apparent visible swelling or so, it could be due to slight transient edema which needs to be investigated.

Following lab investigations are required to confirm the diagnosis like X ray of the neck, Fasting blood glucose, etc. for that you are advised to visit your doctor for proper evaluation. He might prescribe Amitryptiline or Gabapentine for the pain associated with pinched nerve.
Mean while you may take NSAID pain killers along with a PPI (once a day, one hr before breakfast) to prevent the acidity related problem.
Continue your routine exercise as before.
I think I tried to explained the possibility of your present illness.
A feed back in this regard is highly appreciated.
Take care of your health.
