What Causes Intermittent Nausea And Vomiting?

default
Posted on Mon, 26 May 2014
Question: My 20 year old son has been having intermittent nausea and vomiting for a few weeks and the past week he is now having intermittent body aches and chills. He occasionally is running a low grade fever and is now loosing weight. He did go to the doctor and they said his blood tests were all normal. Not mono or strep. What else could this be? His glands are not swollen and he doesn't have a sore throat. He is active going to college and is now working a second job. I am worried that it could be something serious.

It need more evaluation

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,welcome to HealthcareMagic.
I am Dr Aslam here to help you.
Your son is having low grade fever, nausea&vomiting, body aches, chills and weight loss for past few weeks.
If I were your treating doctor,I will first consider viral hepatitis as a possibility here, and will ask for a blood routine examination and liver function test.

If these investigations are normal,I will do a urine routine examination and urine culture and sensitivity test,to look for any un-identified urinary tract infection, and treat accordingly.

Mostly,we can reach the diagnosis by this time.If not,I will start an empirical antibiotic course like ceftriaxone injection, and re-assess the condition after 3-4 days.If not responding, other conditions like tuberculosis, systemic infections etc has to be ruled out by appropriate investigations. You can discuss this with your treating doctor.
Hope I have answered your query. If you have further questions,I will be happy to help.Thank you.
