What Causes Intermittent Flank Pain?

Question: I am a 63 yo XXXXXXX XXXXXXX male. I am 6ft tall at 200lbs. I have been athletic all of my life, jogging, cycling, weight lifting. I am not now a muscular person. Eight years ago, I stopped exercising. About 5 years ago I developed Type 2 diabetes. My Dr. said I was "pre-diabetic and prescribed metformin at a low dose to "try and prevent diabetes." I was asymptomatic. I took the metformin for a short while and stopped. My blood pressure began to rise (as measured at my Dr's office every three months). Now I have HBP. I was prescribed Benazepril 10mg daily. As I felt no symptoms, I wasn't diligent about taking the benazepril and eventually stopped. I also have a history of kidney stones.
About two years ago I passed a rather large stone and it took a week of intense pain to pass it. Months, maybe a year later, I began to get periodic mild to moderate pain in my left kidney. I thought I was passing another stone but the pain would go away for weeks at a time. My Urologist ordered a CT of the kidneys. The CT was pretty much normal except for three very small formation in my calices. My Urologist said they wouldn't cause any pain. He said there was nothing in the CT, his examination, or other lab test that could explanation the kidney pain. I asked him if the HBP secondary to the diabetes could be responsible. He said no!
About a week before that office visit, I began taking the Benazepril again. It had not yet lowered my BP I was monitoring my BP at home several times daily. Two days after the office visit, my BP lowered to normal with the Benazepril. My kidney pain went away.
As long as my BP is normal, I have no kidney pain. When my BP is around 130's+/84+ I have mild to moderate kidney pain. When I take Benazepril, my BP returns to normal and the pain ceases.
I take 10mg benazepril in the morning when I get up. I've noticed that It wears off during the night and by morning my pressure is up and my kidneys hurt. i have begun taking 10mg benazepril twice a day (morning and evening). sometimes the evening dose of benazepril doesn't work (doesn't lower my BP).
My concern is that the pain means something and I believe it may destroy my kidneys in a short time even with the benazepril. what is the problem and what can I do to eliminate it and save my kidneys. I am a young 63 year old and concerned there is something to be done that is not being done.
Unfortunately, I have lost confidence in my Urologist and primary care physician.
Can you help?
Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Get tests done to know cause of symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX and welcome to HCM.
As an Urologist, i can understand your concern.

Well XXXXXXX you must relax first of all.
Any medical problem is best treated by a specialist, never by self.

You have Diabetes,Hypertension and left ? kidney stones with recurrent pain.
Your last CT scan to know cause of your problem, was done about a year back.
So see an Urologist and let him examine you.
I'll give you an expert opinion here, after seeing the following reports :
1. urine routine and culture.
2. blood routine,creatinine,FBS(fasting blood sugar),HbA1C, LFT, platelets,
calcium,phosphorus,uric acid and lipid profile.
3. A CT-IVU scan to know present status of kidneys and stones,if present.
4. 24 hours urine calcium, phosphorus and uric acid.
According to the reports,an expert opinion can be given.
Till the reports are available, you may take an anti-spasmodic tablet for pain.
Avoid taking any diclofenac tablets.
Drink about two to three liters fluids daily.

Wish you well.
Dr.Matthew J. Mangat.
