What Causes Indentations In Leg, Painful Feet And Polyneuropathy?

Question: This is Neurological question. My husband was diagnosed in mid 2012 with Polyneurapathy. I had the shingles and then he was diagnosed by a Neurologist in XXXXXXX The issue is, it seems that no one really knows how to stop the pain, just to temporarily control it. He is not diabetic, no blood pressure, no illnesses ever. His neuropathy is a symptom of something. He has lost muscle mass, has had sudden indentations in his leg, constant needles and pins on his feet(sometimes can't walk straight). The drs have given him gabapentin, Nortriptiline, Aptiom, Cymbalta(sometimes), gabitril and medical foods theramine and trepadone. He was put on a wellness program by a Chiropractor Neurologist removing sugars and salts. He is somewhat better, as in healthier, but pain 24-7. I also took him to XXXXXXX Clinic in XXXXXXX Florida to see a top Neurologist. Does this illness has a cure? How can we continue to manage it besides going to a Neurologist, family doctor, he also had several nerve blocks, which appeared to bring on the shingles symptoms. He attended therapy and alternative medicine with the Chiropractor which caused a fortune and still paying balance, but still ongoing never ending pain. Do you have any answers as to how can I help my husband?

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist,here to answer your query.

I feel concerned about your husband as I really understand that managing refractory neuropathic pain is one of the most difficult to treat disorders and a therapeutic challenge for neurologists across the globe.

Your husband has been on some excellent medications for neuropathic pain like Gabapentin, nortriptyline and cymbalta which are considered to be first line drugs for it.
However, you can also try opioids and capsaicin patches,as they can be very effective add-ons in some refractory patients.

Its good that alternative therapies are of help to your husband. Please let him have a trial of massage therapy and acupuncture.

If you have some pain specialist is your area, you can discuss the options of Botulinum toxin and electrical stimulation of nerves.

I possibly have covered all the options available for refractory neuropathic pain,in broader terms.Basically, managing neuropathic pain has to be an integrated holistic approach of different therapies and no single mode of therapy is considered to be gold standard.Every mode of therapy can play its role.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have some follow-up queries,I shall be glad to answer else, please close the thread-rate it and write a review.Your rating will be of help to me.
