What Causes Hypothyroidism?

default
Posted on Tue, 5 May 2015
Question: 48 yr old female, currently being treated for depression (Zoloft) and anxiety(buspar), also taking Monessa birth control. 5'6 wght 162. I am thinking that my thyroid is low: sudden weight gain 20lbs in 4mths, high stress, always cold when I get home, sweaty feet, twitching in my lip(left not midline) and around my left eye, tired, headaches above right eye about 2 weeks prior to menstrual cycle. I feel my heart has been racing for the past couple days, especially at work (stressful job as dental hygienist) Honestly, not excercising to relieve stress. The dentist I work for is treated or ADD and thinks I have it, I have work there for 6months. Called my GYN, my last TSH results were around 2.0 (within a normal range I was told by front desk staff, not RN/MD/MA. Any how looking for some direction as for the past 4 day I have been have Dark brown blood, light to moderate amounts, no pain, just odd. I feel like I am on the verge of crying in front of my patients, and cried most the night about situations in life I know I have no control over ie: 17 year old sons relationship with his alcoholic father etc. parenting issue. Normally, things bother me but not everything. I feel I need 1) better meds (I could up my buspar prn?? this helps) but I feel my monthly hormones are not helping this my mood fluctuations. Zoloft is at 50mg daily . I have taken Lamictal 8years ago as my dr thought I might have Late Luteal Phase Disphoric Disorder (spelling?) I just think its odd that I have gained weight 20lbs in 4months (normal weight is 140-143), my mood is sad/depression/hopeless, the aniexty level is abnormally high for me (my speech is even hard to understand at times because I feel I can't breath) I do feel fine with focus (not foggy) but can't wait to come home and "check out" with the TV. Any direction/thoughts would be greatly appreciated. (editing Question I will try to sum it up I also added info about taking test for ADD/ADHD results were borderline no referral given.) I did take a "friends" Adderal at one of these times when I felt I was having an anxiety attack and it did calm me down. I'm not a drug seeker, I just want to be treated with medication that is best for me, I truly believe a lot of my mood swings are related to my hormones. Also, I might mention I am in the best happiest postitive and most physically productive mood when I it is 2-3 days before I start my cycle and usually during my cycle. (Could one not just do a blood draw during my cycle and see what is high/low extra and prescribe prn? Maybe I don't need anti-depressents/anxiety meds...just hormone) No I am not crazy... just feeling like it lately. I have held a job in my profession for 25years, never miss work, Type A - First born....typical health care provider. Ok somewhat crazy just kidding-CBJ

Brief Answer:
Hormone staus gyn and tsh recommended, substitution to be evaluated

Detailed Answer:
Dear patient,

To me it sounds a lot like hormonal dysbalance through menopause and/ or thryroid dysfunction is also possible. To figure out if you can profit from hormone substitution rather than antidepressants i'd recommend doing an actual hormonal status through blood work for sexual hormones and thryroid.

Also a supportive psychotherapy can be helpful to you to gain mental stability.

Hope this is helping you , if you have any clarifications you can get back to me, if this was helpful please kindly rate my answer. Best regards
