What Causes Hypothyroidism Symptoms With Normal TSH?

default
Posted on Wed, 23 Jul 2014
Question: I have at least 50% of the listed symptoms of hypothyroidism but my doctor told me that my TSH level was normal. My sister-in-law, who is being treated for hypothyroidism, says that just the TSH level is not sufficient to diagnose the problem. What other blood test do I need to have

Brief Answer:
Hello

Detailed Answer:
Good day,

Thyroid function test commonly are of three types ( and some other special tests).
Free T3 ( Ft3), Free T4 ( Ft4) and TSH. Most often, TSH alone would suffice. However, it is always better to do all the three tests. TSH is elevated in hypothyroidism. However, in central hypothyroidism, TSH may be normal or even low. Hence it is important to check for Ft3 and Ft4 as well.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT MANY SYMPTOMS OF HYPOTHYROIDISM ARE NON SPECEFIC AND YOU MAY GET THESE SYMPTOMS IN OTHER DISEASES AS WELL.

Regards
Binu
