What Causes Hot Flashes Inspite Of Being On Birth Control Pills?

Posted on Tue, 9 Jun 2015
Question: I am 39 years old and have been taking birth control pills for the past 20 years. I am constantly hot, even when others are cool or comfortable. This has been going on for the past 10 years but is getting worse. When you touch my face, it feels hot, my hands are always warm. I have gained 20 pounds in the past 6 months. I feel tired, downright exhausted all the time. I have trouble sleeping at least 50% of the time. I have a head ache most of the time. My skin is dry and I live in XXXXXXX For the first time I now suffer from constipation. I had complete blood work done along with the typical Thyroid tests (blood test), 5 years ago and it came back within normal range. This being hot all the time is terrible to live with. If I do any kind of exercise or strenuous work I get so hot that I can barely stand it and my face gets bright red. Even after a cool or cold shower, it takes hours for me to cool down to normal, which is still hot for me. I am at my wits end as to what to do. Any further tests that should be done? I do not have medical insurance, so need to try to keep the tests down to the least expense possible. Would appreciate anyone's suggestions and input.
Thank you so much

As below.

Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Have you been on the same brand for the past twenty years , or have you changed brands in the meanwhile ?
What is your height and weight ?
Is the feeling of heat constant or intermittent ?
I would suggest an internal exam by a gynecologist and the following tests -
FSH, LH , Serum estradiol.
Also imaging for any adrenal lesions.
That much is a minimum.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

It's constant that I am always hot. My mother, grandmother, aunt & cousins have all gone through menopause between 39- 42. The MD my mother went to would not give her estrogen because her estrogen level was ok. She found a gynecologist that finally gave her estrogen which eliminated her hot flashes. I do not have hot flashes I'm just constantly hot. Which tests should I have done

I've been on the pill for over 20 years and only started having these symptoms in the past 10 years. These past 6 months I feel like I'm a pot boiling on the inside, whenever I try to do anything, I get extremely hot. Just standing and folding laundry makes me hot. I get hot just walking to the mailbox. No matter what I'm doing, I have to stop or sit down and wait to cool of when doing normal activities. I would love to walk for my health but I don't because I get unbearably hot. I don't have health insurance because I cannot afford it. What do you suggest???

Brief Answer:
Investigations suggested.

Detailed Answer:
I would suggest the following hormones - FSH, LH, Estradiol, TSH, and imaging for adrenal lesions.
Without that much of a minimum workup, it is impossible to arrive at a diagnosis.
It could be peri menopause, as it runs in the family.
Hot flashes are of various kinds, this feeling of being hot is included in the cohort of peri menopausal symptoms.
Take care.
