What Causes High Grade Fever Along With Shivering?

Question: My 74 years old father diabetic for last 40 years, in good sugar control, had a spine surgery a month back. has healed properly. On catheter for last 1 month. Changed the catheter 2 days ago.Now having high pulse 160 with low bp 152/90 shivering and an intermittent fever goes up to 103F. At present he does not have a fever but has lots of uneasiness. What could be the reason? What should I do?

The high grade fever with shivering is suggestive of an ongoing bacterial infection. This causes a rapid pulse also.
If the spine surgery wound has healed properly with no discharge then the likely source of infection is urinary catheter.
The treatment of this would involve the following:
a. Drink plenty of fluids
b. Cranberry juice has been shown to be useful in fighting this infection.
c. He can take a urine alkalinizing agent like disodium hydrogen citrate
d. He would also need a course of antibiotics like ciprofloxacin. However, it would be best if we get a urine culture and sensitivity done in order to identify the bacterium and know which antibiotic it is susceptible to.
Since these are prescription drugs, I would suggest you to consult a physician for the same. With this treatment, I think he should be good in about 1 week.
