Posted on Mon, 27 Oct 2014
Question: I have been on the 2/5 diet. 2 days a week of only 500 calories. I just went to give blood on one of the fast days and was turned away because of high blood pressure. I am 58 and slightly overweight, I exercise and only drink a little. I am a non smoker although I was a smoker until five years ago. My blood pressure was 140/110 and five minutes later 179/99 my pulse was 105 and then 101!!

Brief Answer:
Maybe anxiety type BP raise

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I am Dr Mittal.
I have read your query.I think I may have a good suggestion that you can use.

There is a possibility that the blood pressure that you developed may have been due to the sudden anxiety like features.
It is known that when you are about to go to a unfamiliar situation, the BP and pulse, both rise suddenly, and tremendously.

I feel that this is what basically happened to you.

However, your baseline BP was also high and so you should be on regular BP medicines. Testing lipid profile, sugars and ECG will also be useful. I urge you to visit a local GP who can follow up / monitor blood pressure sequentially and start the antihypertensive drugs.

Best of luck.
Dr Mittal.
