default
Posted on Thu, 23 Jun 2016
Question: Two weeks ago a car wheel drove over my foot. In Hospital my BP was 235/90, an all time high. I've been diagnosed with contusion. After that my BP is higher than usual, including in the mornings, which is unusual. Can this new pattern be a result of that accident. If yes-for how long, and what can be done. Thank you.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I carefully passed through your question and would explain that high blood pressure could be related to the pain and all the physical stress that you have gone through.

Normally, after such physical and emotional stress, blood pressure should normalize within some days.

What are your actual blood pressure values? Are you taking any medication?(antiinflammatory drugs can raise blood pressure)

If your blood pressure values remain still high, I would recommend you to closely monitor your blood pressure values during the day (usually sitting position after 10 minutes of total relax) and refer them to your doctor.

Further tests may be needed, besides a careful physical exam:

- a resting ECG
- a chest X ray study
- blood lab tests (complete blood count, PCR, sedimentation rate, blood electrolytes, kidney and liver function tests) to investigate for other metabolic causes that may lead to uncontrolled high blood pressure.

If your blood pressure remains over 140/90 mmHg, most of the time, and all the above tests result normal, you should discuss with your doctor on the possibility of making some changes to your actual anti hypertensive therapy.

Hope to have been helpful!

Best wishes,

Dr. Iliri
