Question: Hello,
I have a son who is 15 and was just diagnosed with Hidradenitis Axillaris by ER Dr. They told me to schedule a dermatology appt but no one can see him until August. What can I do to treat the outbreak under his arms until then? Is there something I can give him or put on the sores to help clear them up?

Brief Answer:
Continue Bactrim till follow up with the Dermatologist

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank You for trusting HealthcareMagic

Hidradenitis Axillaris is caused due to the infection of sweat glands.
Continue Bactrim as prescribed to help clear up the infection.

Here are few remedies you can try to help relieve the symptoms-

-Warm compress on affected area to reduce swelling and pain
-Take Ibuprofen (if not allergic) for pain
-Wear loose fitting clothes
-Keep the affected area clean and dry. Use Hiblicens, which is antiseptic as already prescribed
-Do not shave the affected area. Do not burst the sores/irritate the skin
-Weight reduction if needed. Even slightly being overweight can cause flare-ups of Hidradenitis.
-Diet rich in Zinc like spinach, chickpeas etc / over the counter Zinc supplements can prevent recurrent Hidradenitis.
-Use XXXXXXX and perfume free detergents

Follow up with his Dermatologist as scheduled, no need to worry.

Hope I was able to help you.

Brief Answer:
Management of hidradenitis detailed below

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank You for the follow-up

If the Hidradenitis lesions have subsided with the course of Bactrim then no further active management is needed at this point.

Just follow the remedies mentioned in my previous answer to prevent future outbreaks.
If another outbreak occurs, you can apply Bactroban (Mupirocin) Ointment to affected area and follow up with primary care provider to get back on Bactrim.

If your son still continues to have active infection, even after the prescribed course of Bactrim, start using Mupirocin ointment right away and inform your doctor. He may require a longer course of antibiotics. Some patients require long-term antibiotics, anti-androgen therapy, steroid injections, laser therapy and surgery for effective control of chronic and recurrent Hidradenitis.
