What Causes Heart Palpitations?

default
Posted on Sat, 25 Oct 2014
Question: Started having heart palpitations recently. I feel them most at night and in my upper chest toward my neck. This is very irritating and a little worrisome. I am going through menopause and have been under some stress lately. Could this be the cause?

Brief Answer:
Menopause is one of the cause. Exclude rest.

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear.

Yes, menopause can cause stress,palpitations.
According to me palpitations associated with menopause are not an indication of heart problems and need not necessarily be treated.

But yes, medical conditions that cause palpitations - anemia, heart valve disease or heart disease, hypoglycemia(low blood sugars, thyroid problems require medical intervention. Hence I would like to to evaluate and exclude the above conditions which are equally important.

As a precaution. I would to advice to reduce the frequency and intensity of (if any):
a.Caffeine- coffee, and tea as well as chocolate
b.Smoking and nicotine
c.Diet pills
d.Stress
All the above factors trigger palpitations.

Lastly if the palpitations are troublesome (if you feel dizzy or faint, or tightness or pain in the chest or neck), more frequent and last for long periods then I would start a low dose of beta blocker.
