What Causes Heart Palpitations When I Lay Down?

default
Posted on Thu, 23 Apr 2015
Question:

Hi I had a full cardiac work up 2 months ago. Everything showed a structurally normal heart with some trace regurgitation and holter showed 150 PACS and rare pvcs. The last 3 or 4 days I have been getting more palpitations. I could feel more. I'm not sure if I'm just thinking too much and I feel them more or I'm actually having more. I notice I get more before bed or when I wake up in the morning and sometimes after I eat. Are these still benign? I do have anxiety and some acid reflux. I get really worried and I'm supposed to go on vacation tomorrow

Hi XXXXX!

It's normal to feel palpitations (PACs and PVCs) when you lye down on bed, on waking or after eating. As long as your cardiac examinations are normal you shouldn't worry there are harmless (benign).

It's a well known fact that acid reflux and anxiety trigger palpitations. Controlling anxiety and relieving anxiety reflux may ease palpitations. My advice is to go on vacation tomorrow because this may relieve your anxiety.

Hope this was of help!

Hi Doctor
Thank you for your response. I am leaving in a few hours and I just wanted to speak to you before I leave. I am very anxious about going away and the increase in palpitations has me worried more to travel. Today we spent the day with family and after lunch while sitting on the sofa I could feel some strong palpitations. My cardiologist says mine are not originating from my heart does that mean they are from stimulation of the vagus nerve? Also I have mostly Pacs according to my holter and rare unifocal PVCS. Are those both benign? I just want to make sure I'm safe to travel.

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

My opinion is that your symptoms are related to anxiety and sympathetic system hyperactivity (excesive adrenaline release) that follow.

As long as your examinations are normal and you have only pacs and pvcs they are benign and you shouldn't worry about.

You should go for vacations to relieve you from anxiety. This will lower adrenaline levels and relieve you from excessive pacs and pvcs.

Wish you health!

Hi Doctor. Thank you. I've been worried because I will be away from home and far away from my doctor. Also the place we are staying is 40 minutes away from the hospital. I don't know why but I always feel like I need to be close to the hospital in case something happens. Am I overreacting? I think that I just worry so much all the tine

Hi back XXXX,

Once again you are overreacting. As long as your cardiac examinations are ok you don't need to stay close to the hospital. You should go out there and enjoy your life this will help with anxiety and overreacting.

Hope this was of help!

Ok doctor Thank you I will do my best to enjoy myself and let go. I have one last question if you don't mind. Is SVT POSSIBLE even if it is not recorded on holter monitor? Is it hereditary or can you still develop it after 30 years old?

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

You have the same possibility of developing svt as normal people of your age (you haven't an increased risk of developing svt).

SVT it's not a hereditary disease and you shouldn't worry about it.
