Posted on Mon, 20 Apr 2015
Question: Hi,

I have discharge from the left nostril only, it is greenish and also quite bloody. I have noticed my nose filled with matter mainly on the left only. How should I handle this problem. I am thinking of spraying a saline solution into the left nostril only.

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
you are having a sinus infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Greenish and bloody discharge from the nose is an indication of an infection in the nose or your sinuses and i would strongly urge you to meet your ent doctor.

An infection will require a course of antibiotics for at least 5-7 days, and i would like you to meet your doctor for the prescription.

Your doctor will examine you and may do an endoscopy of the nose to look for the site and extent of infection. He may also ask you to do an xray of the nose for confirming the same.

You can put saline nasal drops and start steam inhalation 2-3 times a day in the mean time, I would also recommend that you avoid forceful blowing of nose as it will increase the bleeding.

Please meet your doctor soon!!

Take care!

Dr Dr. Bakshi,

Thankyou for your advice. I am thinking of seeing a GP first because an ENT appointment may take a while. Is a GP sufficient to examine if there is an infection and required treatment?

Thanks and regards.

Brief Answer:
Meeting an ent doctor would be better!

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Yes , for the time being , meeting a GP should be fine and he can start you on the required medications.

But on the long run , it is advisable to meet your ent doctor , because he will be in a better position to find out why exactly you developed the infection and can give you advice to prevent recurrence of the same.!!

Take care!
