What Causes Grainy Stool When Diagnosed With Epstein–Barr Viral Infection?

Posted on Wed, 9 Nov 2016
Question: Hi. I just noticed that I passed a grainy stool. Dozens of very small, seed- or grain- sized pebbles that sink and pile up in the bowl. They are dark brown and kind of dark red and green. Pretty freaky... No blood or mucus. No fever. No pain at anytime, but my lower abdomen is a bit bloated, growling, and I had the urge to pass more often than usual.

My doctor has previously diagnosed me with Epstein Barr virus. He said "don't worry about it, it will likely 'flair up' from time to time. It 'flared up' again over the weekend. Same symptoms--nausea, lost appetite, etc. I got rest and drank fluids as instructed, but the only thing I have been able to "stomach" is fresh fruit. I'm eating mostly strawberries, kiwis, and other low-acidic fruit. I'm over the worst of the Epstein Barr symptoms, as my energy is back to normal and my appetite has increased, but I'm still only eating "seedy" fruit.

Here's my amateur diagnosis which I would be grateful for your comments: Could the "grainy stool" be caused by eating primarily "seedy" fruit? Is there a more serious potential diagnosis such as ulcerative colitis? Cancer? Stomach ulcers? Kidney or liver issues?

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Hello. This is typical for undigested seeds

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX Your amateur diagnosis is correct. This is not a sign of ulcerative colitis or colon cancer. It could indicate a bout of irritable bowel syndrome with a more rapid passage of stool through your colon, but nothing too serious.

All this said, let your doctor know about this just to cover the bases.
