What Causes Glucose Intolerance After Breakfast?

default
Posted on Fri, 19 Aug 2016
Question: why my glucose intolerance is highest after breakfast. A 35 gm carbohydrate breakfast raises my blood
glucose after two hours to 215mg with my diabetic pill taken. The same 35 gm meal at lunch or supper raises
my blood glucose level 2 hours after that same meal to 145 - 160 mg only.

Brief Answer:
The fasting blood sugar would be of help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Welcome to HCM,

There are many mechanisms that raise the blood sugar in the morning, but first you need to check the blood sugar before breakfast.

If the fasting blood glucose is high, it means that the liver produces too much during the night due to neoglucogenesis and you should raise the dose of metformin in the evening.

Starting the breakfast with high blood sugar, it is normal that after the meal it will be higher.

Please attach some results of the blood sugar during different times of the day and your latest HbA1C result. The BMI would be also of help to inform you further regarding your concern.

Kind Regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
