What Causes Generalized Weakness After Physical Exercise?

default
Posted on Fri, 20 Mar 2015
Question: I am 55 this year. Just yesterday I began moderate exercise on my stationary bike. My legs felt a little weak yesterday. No lightheadedness, no shortness of breath, minimal sweating, I attributed it to being out of shape. (Noticed it a tiny bit while walking 1 mile on Sunday) today I had to stop due to the weakness. Am I out of shape? I really can not afford to go to the doctor under my California Care plan. Please tell me you think I am just out of shape. Please advise and Thank you.

Hi Dr. Rauf,
1. My daily routine is some walking, bending, light lifting. No exercise routine par sey.

2. I used a bicycle within the last month, with my grand daughter, for about 2 - 3 miles. No problems.

3. I have NO diabetes, NO hypertension, I have GERD. (Indigestion issue). that is all.

4. I take a generic for Protonix (For indigestion) and 10 mil (every other day) for depression

5. No chest pain after walking, no shortness of breath, minimal sweating, NO lightheadedness.

I am 200 pounds. 5 feet 10 inches and 55 years old. I just started this excersize routine on Sunday with a 1 mile walk and noticed my legs felt rubbery. Yesterday, on the stationary bike, my legs felt the same yet I was able to be on the bike for 10 mins. Today it felt worse. I thought that maybe this is the "burn" you fell when working out yet it was uncomfortable. No lightheadedness, no shortness of breath NO OTHER symptoms.

Thank you

Brief Answer:
Body adapts to new routine and may cause such symptom

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thank you for the answers. I have gone through them. As there is no positive finding from your history so i would suggest you to relax. Sometimes generalized weakness may occur. When you start a new routine then body takes some time to adapt it. Try to perform exercise from low level and increase it gradually. Most important thing is that you need to be consistent. If you will leave it in the middle then all your stamina will get back to level 1. For your personal satisfaction get a baseline ECG done at a local clinic/hospital. If it appears out to be clear(normal) then you can continue with your daily routine.

Keep a close eye on your health. If you find any unusual symptom then feel free to get back to me or your local doctor for further workup.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help if not then don't forget to close the discussion and rate it.
Wishing you good health !!
