What Causes Fluttering Sensation In The Lower Abdominal Area?

default
Posted on Tue, 28 Jul 2015
Question: I have been having twinges in left lower region...more toward pubic bone. It is not painful. It is like a flutter, then it is gone. I am 56 yrs old and no way that I can be pregnant. I'm really hoping that it is not cancer. Could it be a medication? I have fibromyalgia and routinely take a muscle relaxer....either cyclobenzaprin or XXXXXXX plus naproxen....sometimes tramadol if pain is bad. This feeling has been happening for a couple of months. I don't take all of these meds at same time. Any idea?

Brief Answer:
Chronic fatigue, Stress

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

Thanks for the query.

I have read your query and understood your problem.

What you experience around the pubic region can possibly be Myokymia or involuntary muscle twitching.

The most common causes for this phenomenon is chronic stress, lack of sleep, chronic fatigue, excess caffeine intake, electrolyte imbalance like decreased blood calcium level or high blood potassium level.

This is a harmless phenomenon, so kindly do not worry about it.

I suggest you follow these tips for relief -

(1) Try to avoid taking more than 4 cups of coffee or tea daily, as these are stimulants and make it hard to get sleep which predisposes you to a chronic insomnia. Also avoid smoking

(2) Try to reduce the stress in your life by doing lifestyle modification. Especially if you have recently experienced change in your personal or work front, you could be suffering from stress related condition which can predispose to Myokymia.

(3) Drink plenty of water, about 6-8 hours a day which also helps to nourish the body mechanisms and maintain normal working condition of the body.

(4) Get proper treatment for Fibromyalgia with regular follow ups and trigger point steroid injections as necessary for pain relief.

(5) Kindly do regular exercise like brisk walking for 45 minutes a day to release endorphins which increases feelings of elation and comfort. This also helps to reduce stress drastically.

(6) Eat a carbohydrate portion diet like bananas, porridge before going to sleep at night as this will help to fall asleep easily. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables. Avoid high protein diet at night like much chicken, meat, soy etc.

You are taking pain killers which have a sedative effect. Avoid drinking alcohol as this can add to the sedative effect and can make you extremely drowsy and feel fatigued.

There is no need to worry about cancer or pregnancy from a few instances of myokymia because they are not directly related.

Also get tested for Serum calcium and Potassium by your Doctor to look for occult deficiencies.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

Thanking you.

Regards,

Dr. Aashish Raghu
