What Causes Fluttering Sensation In The Heart?

default
Posted on Sat, 8 Apr 2017
Question: Thanks. I've recently - in the last month or so - been experiencing a sort of "fluttering in the heart" condition on the left side of my chest. I think I have heart arrhythmia going back to my childhood, but it hasn't bothered me in years. I'm pretty active. I bike, hike, play golf, walk regularly and have not experienced any so-called "rapid heart rate" incidences in years. This fluttering situation is new. Could it be related to coffee/caffeine, alcohol intake? My coffee in-take, in particular, may be higher than it should be.

Brief Answer:
need to get an EKG!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have reviewed your information and let me inform firstly that coffee/caffeine, alcohol all can cause accelerated heart rhythms. But before we settle on this, I'd suggest that we get an EKG first to make sure that all is well.

If nothing is identified, then we can safely disregard any heart disease. For now, reducing alcohol intake, caffeine and coffee as well as any tobacco consumption would be very beneficial. You should really cut back significantly on your coffee intake.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to follow up with me if need be.

Thanks for the info. I'm heading out on a trip next week but I have an annual check-up appointment scheduled with my primary physician in two and a half weeks time.
It sounds like I should be OK if I cut back on coffee, etc. and then talk to my physician about the heart arrhythmia and EKG possibility when I see him.
Does that sound reasonable?
