What Causes Fluctuating Heart Rate Readings?

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Feb 2015
Question: I have have a few questions which are on my mind constantly. Over the past six months I have had 2 echos , 3 holter, several ecgs and 2 stress tests. The last groups of tests were done last week. Everything has turned out structurally normal. My stress test was very good. The holter showed occasional pacs and pvcs. One thing that does concern me is my resting heart rate of around 52-56. My holter was always in sinus rythm and average heart rate was 70. However at rest my heart rate goes that low. Also during sleep it went to 41 for a short period. That was during deep sleep. I am very worried but my doctor says everything is normal. Is this the case? I am not athletic but over the past 10 months I have lost 75 lbs through proper diet. I am a 31 year old male. Can you please help me out

Brief Answer:
Bradycardia may be a side effect of loosing weigh...

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX

My opinion is that you are over stressed recently. You should keep in mind that loosing 75 lbs (34kg) in such a short time (only ten minutes) has some side effects which include electrolyte disbalances and bradycardia. You shouldn’t worry about that as long as all exams were normal. It’s only slightly bradicardia (52-56 bpm), which isn’t accompanied with faint or other symptoms.

Also you shouldn’t worry about low HR during deep sleep (41 bpm) it’s a normal finding in that sleep phase and it’s attributed to parasympathetic nervous system activation during deep sleep (Vagus nerve). As long as no cardiac pauses were detected on Holter you shouldn’t worry about.

My advises to help you dealing with your concerns are as following:
-     Avoid extreme diets and start eating a more balanced healthy diet.
-     Add electrolyte and multivitamins to your diet.
-     Increase physical activities and recreational activities (sport dancing etc.)
-     Avoid unnecessary stress.
-     Use chamomile tea.

Hope this will be of help!
Wish you health!

Hi Doctor Thank you for your response. Could weight loss be the reason for the lowering of the heart rate? I am not exercising that is why I was worried about the low heart rate. Also is it safe to take the following vitamin. Magnesium citrate, vitamin c, multi vitamin, omega 3 fatty acid, vitamin b complex? I heard they can be beneficial.

Brief Answer:
What you are experiencing is related to diet and weigh loose.

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Bradycardia is a common findings in person which consume a hypochaloric diet and loose weigh to fast. My opinion is that what you are experiencing is related to diet and weigh loose. This is why I suggest to stop extreme diet i.e. hypochaloric diets.

Also to adjust electrolyte deficiencies and vitamins (which are also common finding with hypochaloric diets) I recommended to use electrolytes and multivitamins ( such as Magnesium citrate, vitamin c, multi vitamin, omega 3 fatty acid, vitamin b complex etc.) This will be of help.

Wish you health!
