Brief Answer:
Likely to be a viral infection

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through the details and understand your concern. Most often such symptoms are due to viral infections and antibiotics are ineffective in such cases. Irrespective of use of antibiotics, it usually spontaneously resolves in 5-7 days.

If your child has fever with temperature more than 100°F, you need to give paracetamol or acetaminophen (P-250, Crocin or Tylenol) to bring down the temperature. Also use tepid sponging.

Giving steam inhalation to your child helps in reducing the congestion and in diluting the cough or phlegm. Water vapor will reach deep inside and would help in diluting the cough and thus would provide relief. Use Nasoclear saline nasal drops in case of nose block.

You may continue the other medicines.

Let me know if I could help further.

We had to travwl out for a couple of days though we were regular on medicines. While fever is being managed, her running nose has deteriorated and there is no respite in cough also. Pls advise if any change is needed in medicine or dosage

Brief Answer:
Steam inhalation would be greatly beneficial.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. You have to be patient. Give her steam inhalation. It will gradually help in resolution of the cough. The runny nose is due to allergic manifestations and antiallergics like chlorpheniramine maleate (contained in Coscopin as well as Maxtra P) given for next few days should help. Although Maxtra P can be given, I would prefer giving plain Crocin or Calpol in same amount only when she has fever.

Let me know if I could help further.

Brief Answer:
Steam inhalation is important.

Detailed Answer:
Cough and cold are practically synonymous as one is intrinsically associated with the other. They do not need to be treated separately. You can give plain Maxtra syrup while you give Crocin only if she has fever.

Just sit with the child on your lap and place the source of steam before you. The water vapor will be in the air and automatically the child will breathe it in.

Brief Answer:
Does not seem to be something to worry about.

Detailed Answer:
As of now, I would not worry about the blood. It would either be due to irritation of the stomach, or due to the retching while vomiting. Unless there is much blood, I would not worry about it.
