What Causes Feeling Of Something Stuck Inside Throat?

Posted on Thu, 22 Jan 2015
Question: Hi.About 4 weeks ago after eating a pizza and a glass of wine I swallowed (after eating) and found I couldn't then when tried again was fine and I forgot about it.Then this week it happened again after eating on Monday this week.then experienced a feeling of something stuck in my throat.I called the doctor and got prescribed Lansoprazole. I have no problem swallowing food or drink but I have noticed I get lots of saliva and then a dry mouth with burning sensation on my tongue.if I keep swallowing my saliva I notice sometimes it is more difficult. Also noticed my breathing more, not so much shortness but more of a tightness.I can't explain the sensation easily.this is intermittent and all since Monday this week. Also noticed a little pain on my left side but goes after one or two times and not persistent.I am worried this is something more sinister like a cancer and have been googling my symptoms and am worried about lung and esophicous cancer. Can you offer any advice? I am 40.prior to this about 2 months ago I had a metal like taste in my mouth and got prescribed medication from the doctor.it has eased but sometimes comes back. Many thanks.

Brief Answer:
You are having GERD and globus pharyngeus

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you.

I went through your post and analysed your symptoms.
You are having symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The feeling of lump in the throat is called globus pharyngeus and GERD is one of the causes.
Your doctor has rightly prescribed lansoprazole. Continue taking lansoprazole for 4-8 weeks.
In addition to this certain lifestyle/dietary changes are to be done.
1. Avoid alcohol and smoking ( if you have these habits)
2. Weight reduction if obese
3. Avoid coffee, citrus, chocolates, carbonated beverages, fatty food and spicy food
4. Avoid eating full stomach and eat multiple smaller meals
5. Go to bed at least 2-3 hours after food.

I hope that answers your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr.R.K.

Brief Answer:
Mostly due to GERD and anxiety

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
The tightness is mostly due to GERD.
The other symptoms are due to anxiety.
If you are very apprehensive, you can get an upper GI endoscopy done to look inside the food pipe.

I hope that answers your question.

Thank you.Last question, are these symptoms typical of a type of cancer? Should I be worried about this? The breathing is like I need to breath again before I have finished breathing out.
Thanks again.
