Posted on Mon, 12 Jan 2015
Question: I'm 19 male and I feel tired easily and I can sleep
well at night. I finished school recently and took a break but before starting college I am working at my parents company. I can seem to get part 1 without feeling drained and I'm losing focus. I can't sleep well either I wake up randomly at all times of the night and I have to walk around and head back to bed

What can be causing this? I have started to take one A day, stress tabs and alaskan fish oil. I'm also using energy drinks nothing works.

Brief Answer:
Such symptoms can occur due to Mild Depression

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for choosing HEALTH CARE MAGIC for your health related queries

You are a healthy young male with chief complaints of tiredness, poor non refreshing sleep and multiple awakenings at night. Such type of symptoms in a healthy male can occur due to following reasons-

- One thing that can cause such symptoms is nutrient deficiencies. Most commonly Vitamin-B12 deficiency. Low Vitamin B12 results in tiredness, repeated fatigue and poor sleep etc symptoms. Iron deficiency anaemia can also cause such symptoms like fatigue and tiredness. I would advise you to get your Haemoglobin and B12 levels checked to rule out these conditions. Start taking B12 supplements if levels come below 300.

- Second thing I would like to rule out is, hypothyroid states. Repeated fatigue and loss of focus can occur due to that. Get your thyroid function tests done to rule out these conditions.

- Poor focus, tiredness and non refreshing sleep can occur due to mild depression also. It can occur in a young male of your age. Though cardinal features of depression like low mood, anhedonia are absent still symptoms like tiredness can occur in mild depression. If every investigation comes normal then we are left with this possibility. In most cases no treatment is needed as just some lifestyle changes help in improvement of symptoms, like:

~ Have good sleep for at least 7 hours a day. As you have multiple awakenings in night I would also like you to improve sleep hygiene. Fix your time to go to bed and don't watch TV or read anything that activates mind from bed. Avoid tea, coffee or alcohol in evening. Light exercise followed by bath with warm water helps in good sleep. Don't think about not getting sleep again and again. These measures will help to get you good sleep.

~ Exercise daily as exercise helps to secrete endorphins and these chemicals lifts the mood.

~ Start taking OMEGA-3-FATTY ACID supplements. These supplements helps to maintain activity levels.

~ Avoid energy drinks, instead you can take strong coffee in daytime to remain active.

~ Take diets rich in proteins and carbs and low in fats. This will help in improving mood. You can also include omega fatty acid diets like Flex Seeds, Walnuts, XXXXXXX nuts, Salmon fish etc. This will also help to increase energy levels.

These life style modifications will surely help you, but if symptoms still persist then consult a psychiatrist for help. Medicines like Modafinil, Armodafinil can be used in your case to improve day time alertness and to reduce tiredness. Antidepressants like fluoxetine, escitalopram can also help to reduce tiredness and other symptoms of depression. Consult a psychiatrist for prescription of these drugs and proper evaluation.

Thanks, hope this helps you. If you have more doubts please ask again.

I take Alaska fish oil which is omega 3 and one A day men's along with stress tabs. Is that enough? I should mention that I don't eat healthy. I'm not in the United States right now so all I eat Is fried chicken and French fries.

Brief Answer:
Continue to use Omega-3-Fatty Acid Oil

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking a follow up question

Yes, the Omega 3 Fatty Acid oil is good to use and continue to use the supplements for at least 4-6 months. As per my opinion, there is no need to take stress tablets. Also avoid energy drinks. Yes, you have to improve your dietary habits. Fried chicken and french fries are rich in saturated fats which will further decrease activity levels. At least avoid french fries completely.

Thanks.
