Question: I am 35 years old male. I woke up one morning and discovered my heart was pumping and beating faster. I went to hospital they gave me some medication, now i'm using a controlled medicine (metoprolo tartrate) some times i still feel my heart rate. Please doctor what is the cause of increased heart beat? is it a sign of heart problem? can this lead to heart attack?.I drink alcohol and smokes too, sometimes my BP is high.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir,

Thank you for posting your query on HCM.

Well looking into your problem I would like to tell you that it will be very difficult to give you a diagnosis based on this history but still we can discuss the options .

In your age increased heart rate can be due to many causes , first the kind of
arrythmia needs to be established on ECG . If it is sinus tachycardia causes are different . First an ECG , ECHO needs to be done . A thyroid function test is also recommended . Alcohol can also lead to different kind of arrythmias so avoid binging till the cause is ascertained .

Whether it is a sign of heart problem or not cannot be said till the exact cause is not established .Till then you keep on taking the metoprolol , it is a medicine to control the heart rate .

Take care.
