Brief Answer:
Need Fluid intake/Urine output measurement

Detailed Answer:
Good day,
Noted your concern,
If your HbA1c is good and the glucose levels are ell controlled, hyperglycemia is not the cause of your symptoms.

The other possibilities

1) Urinary infection ( but uou mentioned that UTI screen was negative)
2) Renal stones
3) Excese water intake
4) Diabetes Insiipidus
5) Anxiety
6) Diuretic intake ( including alcohol/beer intake)

May i suggest few things
a) keep a record of your water/fluid intake and urine volume in a day ( we need the measurements)
b) Do not drink much water after 7 pm.
c) Limit the amount of alcohol ( if you consume)

Knowing the exact amount of fluid intake and urine output will be extremely helpful in assessing further

Binu

Just had another test.

Sugar was detected in urine.

I have the flu and a a virus. Can this cause the sugar to go up?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Binu Parameswaran Pillai (12 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Yes, flu can make the sugar to go up

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
If the blood glucose is normal, then please ignore the urine sugar. Yes, flu and viral infection can make the mouth and nose dry ( and the medcines used to treat flu also can make the mouth dry). Any kind of infection can cause sugar to go up.
This would cause us to drink more water and pass more water.

My blood sugar was 12.2 at the time.

Its come down to 9.

I am guessing its bevause of virus?

I keep going for a wee.

Wee is normal colour.

My hbac1 was 51 around 2 months ago.

Pls help.

I do also suffer from anxiety.

What can you suggest?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Binu Parameswaran Pillai (8 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Please do not worry

Detailed Answer:
Yes, 12.2 was high,. However, good to hear that it came down to 9. Yes, viral infection would cause this. Hba1c was good. So strongly beleive that your blood sugars may settle once infection is okay.

Anxiety may worsen the diabetes and other symptoms. You may practice yoga or meditation to reduce anxiety.

I know that your diabetes is diet controlled. But taking a Metformin would be surely beneficial in preserving your pancreas insulin producing cells for long term

Is this the main cause of sugar in urine and also the reason why i keep going for wee?

I am going at least once an hour.

Would be greatful if you can reassure me and give me some advice?

Brief Answer:
Please do not worry

Detailed Answer:
Dear,
Glucose in urine is a spill over from blood when it was high. Since the blood sugar is returning to normal, urine sugar also will settle in due course. Sugar in urine will not make you wee more. but the excess sugar in blood will make you wee.

It is worthwhile doing a urine test to see if there is some kid of infecton which is making you to pass more urine and cause the weird feeling in the penis.

Take rest. Check blood sugar 3-4 times a day till the flu is settled. If sugar is persistently high, seek medical help. If just one or two readings are high and if they return to normal later, not to worry.

Please relax. This will settle. However, you must consider Metformin later.

I wish you a speedy recovery

Yes doctor the test was done around 2 hours ago.

There no infection or keytones.

It just said sugar in urine. And thne he checked my blood sugar and it was 12.2

Can hba1c change very quckly over the 3 months?

So i am not in a danger? This will be my last question
doctor
Answered by Dr. Binu Parameswaran Pillai (5 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
You are not in danger

Detailed Answer:
Not to worry. You are not in danger.

HbA1c will change if there is a rapid fluctuation in blood sugar reading.
Generally it gives the average blood sugar value over last 3 months. However, the major contribution of Hba1c is from the previous month and minor contribution from 2 months prior to that. So if you have had some rapid fluctuations in blood sugar and if it had persisted for few days, the next Hba1c may be little on the higher side.

I give more importance to multiple self blood sugar monitring rather than HbA1c alone.

Thanks doctor. You have been fantatsic

When do you feel the wee issue will calm down? When my blood sugar goes down?

Are you in india?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Binu Parameswaran Pillai (3 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
48 hours

Detailed Answer:
Your blood sugar will settle when the viral infection/flu improves. This might take up to 48 to 72 hours. Till then check your blod sugars by glucometer at home 3-4 times a day.

Once the blood glucose improves, urine volume also will reduce. But make sure that you dont drink water excessively.
