What Causes Excess Mucus In The Throat?

default
Posted on Thu, 30 Mar 2017
Question: I had my tonsils out two years ago at age 45. Ever since then I have constant, thick phlegm in my throat, and at night and in the morning my nose plugs up and my eyes water and sting. Never happened till after the surgery. This is more than a minor annoyance because I have sleep apnea, and it makes my CPAP machine ineffective. Been tested for allergies, reflux, thyroid, and ears checked, no issues found. The change was immediate after the surgery.

FYI,
I had MRI of my head, sinus are normal. had scope go down my nose, it is normal and not blocked. Had tests on stomach by swallowing medicine and then getting xrayed, everything normal.

Brief Answer:
The primary management is steam inhalation and gurgling with lukewarm water

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. What you have is known as post-nasal drip. It is due to an allergic cause although investigations might not reveal anything. The primary management would be steam inhalation and gurgling with lukewarm water. You may intermittently take Tab. Montair LC (monteleukast + levocetirizine) [prescription medicine].

Feel free to write back.

I have already tried that had and it had ZERO effect. Plus, why would only have an allergic reaction after surgery? I had none of these issues till I had my tonsils out.

oh another thing, there is no sneezing, running nose, or coughing. There is just thick phelgm in the throat, watery stinging eyes in the morning, and nasal blockage.

That all you got?

Brief Answer:
The tonsils are organs of immune system

Detailed Answer:
The tonsils are lymphoid organs that mediate immune response. Allergy is nothing but malfunctioning immunity. With the tonsils gone, the organisation system of those cells mediating the immunity, is gone and it is not unlikely for some malfunctioning to occur. Since the underlying cause remains, you are not getting proper relief. However, steam inhalation, gurgling and monteleukast/levocetirizine are the primary tools that you can use to protect yourself from situation.

You can visit an ENT doctor but I doubt if he would have anything to add.
