Question: What can cause erectile dysfunction in a very healthy, active, fully-employed 73-year-old male in a long term committed relationship with a loving 72-year-old female?

Hello, Thank you for posting your question on Health Care Magic.
Since you mentioned that even at 73 your are fully active and there are no other accompanying ailments it is good .
The only parameter I would suggest you to evaluate further for erectile dysfunction is prostate.
Sometimes after a certain age the prostate swells up it may not affect you much except for urinary disturbances and erectile dysfunction.
Please get a serum PSA level done and Ultrasound scan of your abdomen and pelvis.
Since you are otherwise healthy daily excercise in terms of brisk walking should help to improve your erection.
Taking over the counter multivitamins can also help
