What Causes Erectile Dysfunction After Having Cardioversion?

default
Posted on Mon, 19 Jan 2015
Question: I have been on 2 x 60mg (1 morning & 1 evening) modified release tablets since a cardioversion early October I noticied increased aches 7 joint pains plus very drowsy at times and generally slow & forgetful (lack of concentration). About 6/8 weeks ago i was dispensed slow release capsules rather than tablets. These seemed to have less side affects. The pharmacist told me it was a 'one off' and they could not prescribe capsules without an amended prescription, Is it likely the capsules would have had different side effects as I believe.
I am 72, married and a regular cyclist but have recently noted reduced enthusiasm for my regular rides 25/30 miles a week (more in summer). I also seem to have increased sexual dysfunction.
Thank you, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Please mention capsule/tablet's name

Detailed Answer:
Hello Sir!

Welcome to Healthcare Magic!

I understand your concern.Though you have not mentioned the name of the tablet,I would guess it to a be a Beta blocker like Metoprolol, propranolol, esmolol or so.If your tablet is one among this then I would say "YES",they can cause erectile dysfunction, though not that common.

These medications can affect the nervous system reaction that causes an erection and make it difficult for the arteries in the penis to widen (dilate) to let in enough blood flow to cause an erection.

Unfortunately, they can also block crucial chemicals like norepinephrine and epinephrine, and cause memory problems.Joint pain though very rare, but can be an issue. Please do not stop taking drug suddenly.

Consult your doctor regarding these symptoms and ask to change these tablets.

Hope this helped.Feel free to ask more.

3rd attempt:
I have been taking 60mg DILTIAZEM MR TABLETS morning & evening for about 3 months. Evening dose with 4mg WARFARIN. On a previous occasion the Pharmacy gave me CAPSULES for 28 days, I seemed to have less side affects with the capsules, is this likely? I am considering asking my Doctor to amend my prescription.Side effects mainly joint pain and especially feeling of prickly heat. I have recently become very forgetful and short term memory is pathetic.
I do not know why you have not received my previous follow up questions
THANK YOU, XXXXXXX XXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Joint pains could be due to Diltiazem

Detailed Answer:
Hello Sir!

Thank you so much for writing back!

There are chances of diltiazem causing side effects like joint pain(less common),but symptoms such as forgetfulness or short term memory loss cannot be any way related to diltiazem.

There is no difference in side effects of any drug if taken as tablet or capsule. Please discuss this with your physician and ask for change in prescription if it is hampering your lifestyle.

Hope this helps. If you have no further clarifications, please rate this answer and close this discussion.
Regards!
