What Causes Elevated Liver Enzymes?

default
Posted on Wed, 15 Jul 2015
Question: Evening,
During normal blood work my report came back with elevated liver enzymes. After an ultra sound I was told I had a textured liver.... No more info....I had a negative colonoscopy 3 years ago, and told to return in 10 years. I had an endoscope done next which showed a 'large' hiatel hernia which was oozing slightly. I am having another 'liver enzyme' blood test shortly. Where could this be leading? I have not been told much so far. History ... When I was 6 weeks old ( am now 63) I had a liver biopsy because it was thought I did not have a functioning bile duct. In fact I had 'caught' hepatitis in the delivery room (no letters attached at that time). I had my right eye removed at 19 due to melanoma. Nothing recurring since then. I have become very gassy, can not tolerate many foods I used to eat, and have mild deficiency in iron and vitamin D. Have had a stressful year adult son is bi-polar, I work as a speech pathologist in the schools with delayed students.... Enough for now any comments?

Brief Answer:
liver function derangement along with gastric symptoms

Detailed Answer:
Hi!

Welcome to health care magic!

I am Dr. Saddiq Ul Abidin. I have read your problem in detail and will try to help you in best way possible.

First of all, it is sad to know that you had to go through all this, though the way you dealt with everything, I must say is commendable. Especially the best part being your job description, being speech pathologist, which is indeed the best one can offer to such children. It is also sad to know about your eye, but again all in the way, your tone was never complaining and the way you fought with everything and your mental strength is examplory for me. These words of gratitude were really important, because I may not get another chance to say you this.

Now we need to take your issues, one by one.

See liver function tests derangement might b due to multiple reasons, ranging from viral hepatitis to certain autoimmune disorders, as well as in metabolic disorders of iron and copper to fatty infiltrations. All those needed to be worked out in detail. However, the history of such disease in childhood and biopsy suggests that might have doubted some other diagnosis of may be some heredity defeciencies like XXXXXXX other than simple physiological jaundice of new born, which is normally common in this age group and one doesn't do biopsy for that. But since same liver had sustained you well for over 60 years, so you need not to worry about severity of that disease.

All in all, a good approach will be to rule out these possibilities on blood work up and then going for a liver biopsy again if all this work up is not suggestive. Yes, Monitoring LFTs regularly, is a must for you. The ultrasound shows that lover hasn't been damaged so much to become fully cirrhotic yet so things can be reversed at this stage.

The endoscopy suggests that there is no issue of varices, which is normally present with liver disease, though hiatal hernia if small needs no surgical cure, but if it is oozing, you need to discus with a gastroentrologist and a surgeon. That can be read in for your gaseous distention and discomfort.

So I would conclude saying, dear you have dealt many bigger issues with much strength before and I am sure you will come out of this real soon. You just need to stay put and have a regular followup with a gastroentrologist and keep on following his advice.

Hope this has answered your query, if you have any more questions, feel free to ask. You can approach me directky through my profile. kindly rate me generously before closing, and leave your feedback if possible.

Regards,
Dr. Saddiq Ul abidin.

Brief Answer:
weight lifitng precautions

Detailed Answer:
Hi!

Yes! Lifting heavy weights and strenous work out can further increase the extent of damage. It would be better if you can avoid it. Now, since it is oozing so you should get an urgent consult with a surgeon and a gastroentrologist soon, to review of the latest status and relevant management options.

Don't forget to rate generously before closing. Regards.
