What Causes Ear Pain And Skipped Heart Beats After Sore Throat Infection?

default
Posted on Mon, 26 May 2014
Question: Hi, my wife and I recently just returned from Italy. She ended up getting sick with a sore throat on the left side which actually made it feel numb and hard to swallow without drinking water. We were able to get some antibotics but didn't seem it completely healed her. Over the next week her ear started to hurt and had sharp pains in her head on that side. Like needles poking her.

She did see a doctor and believe her nerves could of been affected from being sice and is sending her to a neurologist. The past couple days have me worried though. Her heart has been skipping beats and pounding hard and causing her to cough. Would this be releated? Should she go to the hospital or wait until May 14th when she goes to the doctor?

Brief Answer:
You should take her to the ER.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX

Thanks and welcome to healthcaremagic.com

I am sorry to hear about the situation your wife is in.

I have carefully studied the question you have posted and the description fits infective endocarditis or Rheumatic heart disease (Particularly because your wife has had a recent sore throat).

It is quite uncommon in this modern era of antibiotics but developing palpitations after a throat infection raises an alarm for the possibility of Rheumatic heart disease of infective endocarditis.

The pain in the head on the side of ear pain is probably because of facaial nerve inflammation, this will resolve with proper anti-inflammatories and antibiotics, but the most important symptom your wife is having right now is pounding heart and skipped beats, this needs urgent evaluation, I do not think you can wait till 14th May to get it evaluated, hence please do take your wife to the ER.

I hope this addresses your concern, please do revert back if you need further assistance.

Wishing your wife a speedy recovery.

Warm regards.
