Question: Dear Sir,
Our daughter had a baby on the 25th May, she was diagnosed with preeclampsia about 1 week before her baby was due she had high blood pressure 140/90 hers is usually 110/60 and her liver function is still slightly down. Now here is the problem that is confusing doctors -> A few days before she had the baby she had double vision that got gradually worse and it turned her eyes permanently cross eyed and she has a massive headache that wont go, she said she feels pressure radiating through the base of her skull to her eyes. She has had an MRI and CT scan all come back fine. They have ruled out stroke. She is getting a lumbar puncture today.

Do you have any idea what could be causing this ??

Kind Regards,

Brief Answer:
Various possibilities exist.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your daughter's symptoms.

In this situation, various possibilities exist:

1. Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST): can cause headaches, double vision, and crossed eye. MR venogram can confirm the diagnosis.

2. Meningitis: lumbar puncture can confirm the diagnosis.

3. PRES- posterior reversible leukoencephalopathy syndrome- this is common in postpartum period. A repeat MRI brain may be needed to confirm the diagnosis.

There is no need to worry, as all these conditions improve with treatment.

I hope it helps.

Thanks for the information.

The MRI & CT scan has come back all fine.

Meningitis wouldn't cause them symptoms would it ?

Does pregnancy normally cause this? As its perplexing to doctors as they have no idea at present.

Brief Answer:
Meningitis is a possibility.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

Meningitis should be considered in the presence of these symptoms, and it is more common after delivery and in pregnant women. MRI and CT scans may be normal in patients with meningitis, especially, if they are done without contrast injection.

Lumbar puncture results would be useful in excluding meningitis.

I hope it helps.
