What Causes Dizziness On Seeing Blood?

default
Posted on Wed, 2 Apr 2014
Question: Hi Doctor, I feel dizziness when few ml (5ml) of blood is taken for tests. I cannot stand and loose all consciousness. I can see the blood of others but when I feel that my blood is taken out, I can control it. My finger was cut while cooking and I was OK until I put the finger in mouth to stop bleeding. Then I felt giddiness and it stayed for almost 15 mins. I feel that my brain has become hot and I start sweating. I experienced it for the 1st time at the age of 22. I had been for blood test and after that I went to restroom and fell there. That time I thought it would be because of no diet since morning. But I am facing this every time. Please let me know what should be done with this. Thanks,
doctor

Brief Answer: Phobia Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for choosing health care magic for posting your query. I have gone through your question in detail and I can understand what you are going through. The condition that you have described is called a phobia. At age 21 when you had your first episode of giddiness, it was ptobably a genuine one due to some medical cause. However your mind was conditioned for such symptoms along witg the stimulus of blood sampling. In simple words, so unwanted learning had occured in the mind. This has led to the development of phobia of blood sampling. It is definately disabling and with age theres gonna be many instances when the blood sampling would be required and each time if you keep fainting then it is certainly a matter of trouble. The treatment requires both medical and as well as psychological treatment. Medical treatment involves use of paroxetine, clonazepam and propranolol. It reduces the anxiety. The psychological treatment involves behavioural therapy and systematic desensitization. This is taken by a psychologist or a.psychiatrist and it could involve some 8-10 weekly session in which graded stimulus will be accompanied with relaxation exercises, thereby undoing the previous learning. Do meet your treating psychiatrist and discuss these issues and plan out the treatment protocol. Hope I am able to answer your concerns. If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you. If not, you may close the discussion and if possible you may rate the answer for me, so that I get a good feedback.
