Question: on july 30, 14 i had back surgury. the next morning when the doctor came in i told him we had a problem. i could not pick my right leg off the bed. his exact words were 'i must have aggravated the nerve more than i thought i did.' since the operation my health and ability to walk has gone downhill. i can't even walk up and down stairs normally. can you give me any ideas of what i can do to improve my health. i am a 76 year old male in good health except for my back and leg problem.

Physiotherapy and muscle plus posture training

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.
Sorry to know about your present condition.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:
1. Neural injuries are serious issue as once damaged, complete recovery is difficult.
2. Physiotherapy to strengthen muscles of back and legs necessary to avoid further damage and also weakening of muscles. Both active and passive exercises are necessary.
3. Due to abnormal gait and weak muscles at present, increased risk of joint damage present. Correct use of posture and gait should be attempted. Use walking stick to help to avoid abnormal gait and further damages.
4. Nutritional supplements, particularly vitamin supplements like a mix of B-complex, Vit c and E are known to be helpful.
5. Additionally weight loss management and massage therapy will be beneficial. Regular training programme is essential. Improvement would be slow, but will be fruitful.

Hope it helps.
