What Causes Difficulty In Standing On Toes?

default
Posted on Mon, 2 Jun 2014
Question: Hi, my name is XXXX. I have asked a similar question before but I have began to worry a bit again about the same thing. I don't have insurance or much money, so I can't be running to the doctor with every question I have about this, so I thank you for your time.
About 3 or 4 years ago I noticed I couldn't stand on my toes, and it never really worried me to be honest until I got on the internet and read a lot of doom and gloom articles about Neurological diseases and such, I have had general weakness in my hands a bit too and I have been very anxious for some time now.
I have not had a good reflex in my patella area for years, but I don't have any strange reflexes going on like a Babinski sign or Hoffman sign, my toes curl down and my fingers don't jump... (I test myself ALOT)
I am able to jog around on the grass every day but I can't really jog too well on concrete because my toes kinda slap the ground. I am able to do what I need to do every day, I just feel a general weakness and I can't stand on my toes or go back on my heels. I can jump pretty well, I jump 2 steps in one jump up the stairs and jump onto the couch and such over and over to exercise.
My feet have been the exact same for the past few years with really no change at all besides maybe a very slight improvement that I think I have noticed, but not much.

I guess I am just trying to figure myself out without freaking out about some horrible problem, I really don't know what I should think or feel about it, I just need to hear what a professional thinks.

Brief Answer:
There could be minor weakness of feet muscles.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your symptoms in detail. First of all, I would like to reassure you that these are not suggestive of any serious neurological illness.

Based on the description, it does suggest minor weakness of feet muscles. These could be related to peripheral neuropathy- where the nerves in the feet, such as peroneal and tibial nerves get affected. In any case, it is not severe, and there is no need to worry.

Slight improvement is a good news.

If you notice worsening of symptoms, then, you can undergo a nerve conduction studies to confirm the diagnosis.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,

Thank you.

Also I was wondering about my hands, they have been a bit weak as well for a while, without any real change in their ability or strength.

My left hand mostly but also my right a bit, like I can't cross my fingers together as well and they aren't as strong.

Again, it hasn't really changed for a long time, I was just wondering if you have ever seen this before or heard it. I can use them fine mostly, like typing this message without a problem.

Is there anything that could be done to improve my overall strength and flexibility?

Brief Answer:
Exercises would help.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

The most important is to do muscle strengthening exercises under the guidance of a physical therapist. This would definitely improve your muscle strength.

Good food with adequate amounts of protein can help in building muscles too.

Medications are not of much help. However, if there is a deficiency of vitamin B12 or vitamin D, then, vitamin supplements should also be taken.

Best wishes,
