Question: hi. i have had very bad diarrhea for 9 days now. i have bad pain in my stomach. my stool is watery and smelly. my urine is very dark.. i am worried my kidneys will shut down. i go to the toilet to urinate as normal but its very dark. no pain. just dark

Brief Answer: Answer given below Detailed Answer: Hi, Thanks for posting your query. I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you. Kidneys will shut down only if you are severely dehydrated due to diarrhea. Since you pass urine as normal but dark urine, it indicates your kidneys are still functioning and you are dehydrated to some extent. Drink enough fluids and also aqualyte solution as long as you have diarrhea. This will prevent both dehydration and kidney shut down. Since you have diarrhea for nearly 9 days, a complete blood count and a stool analysis may be done as the first step in finding the cause. You probably have a stomach bug which might be the cause for this acute diarrhea that is foul smelling. You can take BRAT diet (Banana Rice XXXXXXX sauce and Toast) and also include yogurt. I have done a stool sample and waiting for result. I went to two doctors here that said it would be a stomach flu. I just wory about kidney shut down. My stomach also makes alot of noise. I am drinking hydralite and water. Apart from feeling tired and stomach pains not much more. Feeling A little bit hot sometimes.
