What Causes Diarrhea And Stomach Cramps Post A Hysterectomy?

default
Posted on Thu, 31 Mar 2016
Question: Hello, I'm a 53 year-old female. I had cervical cancer at 29 and a total hysterectomy. For the past three days I've been in what I can only describe as full fledged labor contraction pain. I also have diarrhea. In May I weighed 137 lbs. today I weight 109. Right now, at the present time, I cannot eat nor drink anything without having a full on contraction that makes me scream at the top of my lungs. I recently had a cat scan and blood work and it showed nothing. NOTHING. Every time I have one of these contractions it's in all of my abdomen and lower back. I also feel like i'm going to throw up with each one of them. I really do not want to go to ER because that's where I recently had my cat scan and they found nothing!

Brief Answer:
Stomach bug

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you.

Since all the symptoms of diarrhea and cramps are occurring only for the past three days, the most likely cause is a stomach bug.

You can get a stool analysis done to confirm it.
Drink enough fluids to remain well hydrated. Good urine output and moist tongue are indicators of good hydration status. To get relief from cramps, you can take Bentyl.

If the stool has blood or mucus in it or if the stool analysis shows bacterial infection, you may require a course of antibiotics. Otherwise take only probiotics.

Take BRAT diet ( Banana, Rice, Apple sauce and Toast).

If cramps persists in spite of taking Bentyl or if you become drowsy or have persistent vomiting, go to ER.

Dr.R.K.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I waited for your reply, but the pain because so bad my hubby took me to ER. They did a cat scan and blood work. He took me to a DIFFERENT ER. They diagnosed me with both Colitis and Diverticulosis. And they told me to eat the exact foods you told me to eat.

They put me on antibiotics as well.

I've had this since my early 20's. I always thought it was just something I ate. Or if i went out with friends and had a drink it would make my abdominal hurt for about 20 min, than it would stop.

I wake up about once a month in this pain but it usually only last about 30 min and then it's gone.

My questions is, is this getting worse?

Is there treatment for it?

I plan to ask my dr and make and appt with a GI. But I'd like to find out more and I don't trust much of anything I read online.

Thanks for your help.

Brief Answer:
Notworsening

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I do not think it is worsening.
The colitis could be due to infection which can be confirmed with a stool analysis.

Diverticulosis occurs when you are chronically constipated.
You need to take high fiber diet with enough fluids.

Sometimes these diverticula can get infected and cause pain in the left lower abdomen and you would require a course of antibiotics in that case.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Dr.R.K.
