What Causes Diarrhea After Drinking Cranberry Juice?

default
Posted on Thu, 18 Dec 2014
Question: Yesterday I drank about 24 ounces of cranberry juice. Last night I went to the bathroom 4 or 5 times with diarrhea. Each time the stool was dark red. I thought it might be the cranberry causing the red color. This morning I cant stand for more than 10 to 20 minutes without felling VERY light headed. I should add that I had a heart stint implanted back in 2011. I lost my job and medical insurance about a month ago so I cant see my doctor unless it is absolutely necessary. The only medication I'm on is mirtazapine for depression. What should I do?

Brief Answer:
most likely it is due to cranberry juice.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!
Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I read carefully your and understand your concern.

Most likely the red color of your stools is caused from Cranberry juice.
It is widely known that drinking cranberry juice can cause diarrhea and red stools.
Since you had 4-5 episodes of diarrhea you have lost o lot of fluids and electrolytes. This can cause dehydration that can explain feeling light headed today.
I suggest to rest a lot for some days, eat healthy (avoid eating foods that color stools like tomato products, beets, cranberries and grape juice).
-Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.
If after some days (3-4 days) you continue to have dark red stools with diarrhea you should consult your doctor because you may need some stool examination.
Make sure not to take foods that can give a red color to stools like cranberry juice, beets, tomato products etc.

Hope it helps.
Let me know if you have any other question or doubt to clarify.I will be happy to assist you further.

Kind regards,
