What Causes Diarrhea, Abdominal Pain, Vomiting And Hematemesis After Eating Meat?

default
Posted on Tue, 29 Dec 2015
Question: I think I ate a bad hamburger. 12 hours after eating it, I began having extreme abnominal pain and voimiting, and I noticed that I had not digested my food AT ALL from 12 hours prior. Since then I have had extreme vomiting, briefly throwing up bright red blood as well. I also have diarrhea, but mostly SEVERE stomach pains. I cannot keep anything down, not even liquids. This started early Saturday morning, and I am still unable to keep anything down and am still having extreme stomach pain and diarrhea. I have not thrown up any blood since saturday. I'm wondering if this is indeed food poisoning, and if so, how long I can expect these systems to last.

Brief Answer:
High risk for E. coli infection

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns.

You had bad hamburger 12 hours ago and now you are vomiting blood and having diarrhea. This sounds like you have an E. coli infection. The E. coli infections may last up to 1 week. If you are no longer vomiting and not getting black or bloody stools then you can treat this at home. I recommend using pedialyte or other electrolyte solution to replenish the fluids you are losing in your stools. Sips of fluids over the next day should help. If you can drink then you may need to be seen to be sure you are not dehydrated.
