Question: I'm a first year med student and we're going through cranial nerve tests and noticed that my uvula deviates to the side while saying "ah". Is this ever considered normal? no other symptoms apparent.

Brief Answer:
It may be normal.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

In some normal cases, uvula may deviate to one side on saying "ah". However, we need to correlate with other signs before committing on a cranial nerve palsy affecting the vagus nerve.

These include "curtain like" movements of palate on saying "ah" as well as gag reflex on either side.

Only if all these three signs are present, should we give importance.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
