What Causes Delay In Menstruation And Soreness In Breasts After Taking Plan-B?

default

Question: Hi. I'm about a week and a half past when I was supposed to get my period. I did take the morning after pill twice in the 60 days before that, with an early period last month. I have also started a new diet and exercise program, going from no gym time at all to going 5-6 days per week. I've lost about 13 pounds in the last 5 weeks as well. I took a pregnancy test this morning, and it was negative. My breasts are sore, but that's the only period symptom I have. Could my period be late because of the combination of plan b pills and extra exercise/lower calorie intake?

Brief Answer:
Yes, that is the probable reason.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Are your cycles generally regular ?
If yes, then the late period could be mainly due to the Plan B which you have taken twice recently.
The morning after pill can delay your cycle upto 10 days , sometimes more.
Unaccustomed exercise and changes in your diet too can definitely impact it.
So yes, the combination of these two factors can certainly delay your period.
You could take progesterone withdrawal tablets to jump start your period.
But that is best done after consulting an OB - GYN, and going in for a pelvic ultrasound scan to rule out anything more sinister ( pregnancy, cyst, fibroid etc ), and then taking those pills as per prescription.
Generally they are prescribed twice a day for 5 days, and you bleed within a week of stopping them.
All the best
