Question: What should I do to heal my fingernails, which have darkened skin near the tips, and flaky, ripping, layered, shattering nails? My hair has also become much finer and much thinner.

Looking at your history it could be any of following
fungal infection of hair and nail
nutritional deficiency
exposure to chemicals or UV rays
allergy

i would like to know about the duration of illness the hair and nails disorder

I would advise you to consult a dermatologist for detailed clinical examination and a battery of tests like CBC hemoglobin PBS for cell morphology and nutritional assessment
