Posted on Fri, 31 Oct 2014
Question: Hi Doc,
Recently, I underwent treatment for gastroenteritis problem having loose motion and I had fever which lasted for a day only. Medications included Ofloxacin and Ornidazole with probiotic. Even after medication is complete I am still having problem of having dark colored semi solid stool and feel urgency for bowel movement, after 10-12 hrs of taking food, after which I feel relieved. Am taking lots of fluid to keep myself hydrated. Can you suggest is the infection not treated or it may be problem arising due to medication. Kindly help.

Brief Answer:
Dark stools after treatment for gasteroenteritis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thank you for asking Health care magic forum.
I have gone through your query. Dark colored stools are most likely due to gastrointestinal tract bleeding mostly from upper part. As you have taken antibiotics and probiotics together it is not likely to be a complication of that. But if you get dark stool while on ofloxacin, then no need to worry as it is due to the drug. It is usual to have dark colored urine and faeces while on ofloxacin.

Urgency can be there for some more days as time will be required for normalizing the motility. You can take curd or yogurt which also helps in normalizing intestinal flora. Pantoperazole and probiotic can be continued for 3-4 days again and if still the condition persist then you should get a consultation of gastroenterologist to rule out any gastrointestinal bleeding.
Hope this may help you.Let me know if anything not clear.
